The Clarity Technique That Ensures You’re Solving the Right Problem

by John Preston  - October 13, 2025

Before proposing any solution, confirm you're addressing the actual challenge your prospect faces.

The Misalignment Risk:

Even after discovery conversations, misunderstandings occur:

  • Prospects struggle to articulate their real challenges
  • You interpret their words through your product lens
  • Assumptions fill gaps in understanding
  • Surface symptoms mask deeper issues

The Articulation Strategy:

One of the most powerful sales techniques is reflecting back what you've heard in clear, structured language. This serves multiple purposes:

Validates understanding: "Let me make sure I understand correctly. You're experiencing [specific challenge], which is causing [specific impact], and you need [specific outcome]. Is that accurate?"

Clarifies priorities: "It sounds like the most critical issue is [primary problem], followed by [secondary concern]. Do I have that right?"

Reveals gaps: When you articulate their problem, prospects often add: "Yes, and also..." or "Not quite - it's more about..." These corrections are gold.

The Solution Preview:

After confirming the problem, outline potential solution approaches before mentioning your product:

"Based on what you've described, solving this would require [approach 1], [approach 2], and [approach 3]. Does that align with how you're thinking about it?"

This demonstrates expertise and ensures you're both envisioning similar solutions.

The Connection Bridge:

Only after confirming both problem and solution approach should you connect your offering:

"Our product addresses this by [specific capability] which delivers [specific outcome you've already agreed is needed]."

The Alignment Benefits:

When you articulate problems clearly:

  • Prospects feel genuinely understood
  • Misalignments surface before proposals
  • Your solution becomes obviously relevant
  • Objections decrease dramatically
  • Close rates improve significantly

The Confirmation Loop:

Throughout your conversation:

  1. Listen actively to their description
  2. Reflect back what you've heard
  3. Confirm accuracy before proceeding
  4. Adjust understanding based on their corrections
  5. Connect solution only after alignment

Your Articulation Challenge:

In your next three sales conversations, pause before presenting your solution. Articulate the problem back to them and wait for confirmation or correction.

Remember: You can't solve problems you haven't accurately understood. Clarity precedes closing.
