The Counter-Intuitive Secret: Why Giving Prospects an Escape Route Closes More Sales

by John Preston  - September 20, 2025

Are you afraid of coming across too pushy during sales presentations?

Most salespeople are. They've seen the movies and TV shows where salespeople are portrayed as plaid-jacketed used car dealers trying to sell people cars they don't need. Nobody wants to be that person.

I've discovered that in trying to avoid being pushy, many salespeople become too passive and lose sales they should have won.

The Pressure Paradox:

Here's the counter-intuitive truth: The best way to ensure you don't come across as pushy is to give the customer an out from the very beginning.

The Magic Phrase:

"I think I've got a great solution for you here. I don't know if it's a good fit – that'll be up to you to decide."

What This Does:

  • Removes pressure from the entire conversation
  • Signals respect for their decision-making ability
  • Eliminates defensiveness before it starts
  • Creates psychological safety to evaluate honestly
  • Positions you as consultant, not pushy salesperson

The Psychology Behind It:

When prospects feel trapped or pressured, their natural response is resistance. But when you explicitly give them permission to say no, something magical happens – they relax and actually listen to your presentation.

The Trust Factor:

By acknowledging upfront that your solution might not be right for them, you demonstrate:

  • Honesty about your product's limitations
  • Confidence in your solution's value
  • Respect for their judgment
  • Professionalism in your approach

Implementation Examples:

Before a presentation: "I'm excited to share this with you, but I want to be clear – this might not be the right fit for your situation. You'll be the best judge of that."

During product demos: "As we go through this, if anything doesn't align with your needs, just let me know. No pressure here."

When handling objections: "That's a fair concern. This solution isn't right for everyone, and it might not be right for you."

The Reverse Psychology Effect:

When you give people permission to leave, they often want to stay. When you tell them they might not need your product, they become more interested in why they might.

The Confident Professional Approach:

Giving an out demonstrates supreme confidence in your solution. You're essentially saying: "I believe in this product so much that I'm willing to let you walk away if it's not perfect for you."

The Results:

  • Higher engagement during presentations
  • More honest feedback about concerns
  • Faster decision-making process
  • Better qualified prospects who actually buy
  • Stronger relationships built on trust, not pressure

Your "Give Them an Out" Challenge:

This week, start every sales presentation by explicitly giving prospects permission to decide it's not right for them. Notice how this changes their engagement and your own confidence.

Remember: The sale you're willing to lose is often the one you'll win.
