Are you exhausted right now? Do you feel like you barely have the energy to get through your next sales call, let alone crush your monthly targets?
If so, you're not alone – and more importantly, you're fighting an uphill battle you don't have to fight.
During my decades in sales and business coaching at JP Business Academy, I've discovered that the difference between top performers and everyone else isn't just skill or knowledge. It's energy management. The best salespeople I know are like energy accountants – they're constantly monitoring what fills their tank and what drains it.
Yesterday we talked about bringing high energy to presentations. Today, let's talk about maintaining high energy, period.
The Obvious Energy Boosters: We all know the basics – more sleep, better nutrition, regular exercise. These are your foundation. But here's where most people stop, and it's costing them dearly.
The Hidden Energy Vampires: The real game-changer is identifying the subtle energy drains that we've normalized in our lives. These are the silent killers of peak performance:
The Complainer Friend: You know the one. They call, and for the next hour, you're their emotional dumping ground. You hang up feeling completely drained, wondering why you feel so defeated.
Digital Quicksand: That "quick" scroll through social media or mobile game that somehow steals an hour of your life and leaves you mentally exhausted.
Toxic Work Relationships: The colleague who always brings negativity, the client who never appreciates your efforts, the vendor who makes every interaction difficult.
Cluttered Environments: Physical and digital clutter that creates constant low-level stress.
The Energy Audit Process:
Here's what I teach my clients: Become an energy detective. For one week, pay attention to how you feel before and after every interaction:
- Phone calls
- Meetings
- Social media sessions
- Entertainment choices
- Even your commute
If your energy level is lower after an activity than before it started, you've identified a leak in your energy bucket.
The Professional Impact:
This isn't just about feeling good – this is about your bottom line. When you're operating from a place of sustained high energy, you:
- Think more clearly during negotiations
- Maintain enthusiasm throughout long sales cycles
- Bounce back faster from rejection
- Attract clients with your positive presence
- Make better strategic decisions
Your Energy, Your Responsibility:
You can't control everything that happens to you, but you can control what you allow to drain your energy. Sometimes this means difficult conversations. Sometimes it means changing habits. Sometimes it means protecting your time more fiercely.
Remember: Energy is the essential ingredient for sales success. Manage it like the precious resource it is.
What's one energy drain you've identified in your life? How are you planning to address it? Share in the comments – your insight might help someone else plug their own energy leaks.
