The Lazy Salesperson’s Confession: “I Get Stumped by That Objection All the Time”

by John Preston  - August 31, 2025

If you really want to frustrate me as a sales coach, walk up to me and say, "Man, I get stumped by that objection all the time."

Here's the hard truth: Getting stumped once is forgivable. Getting stumped by the same objection repeatedly? That's just lazy.

During my decades in sales and coaching at JP Business Academy, I've discovered something that will revolutionize how you think about objections: There are only 15-20 objections you'll ever encounter, regardless of what you're selling. Master your responses to these, and you'll elevate yourself to the top of the sales food chain.

The First-Time Pass:

Look, I get it. The first time you hear a new objection, you might freeze up. That's natural. You can't prepare for every possible scenario when you're starting out. I'll forgive you for not having a perfect response to something you've never encountered before.

But here's where champions separate from amateurs:

The Second-Time Test:

Once you've been stumped by an objection, you now have valuable intelligence. You know this objection exists. You know it could happen again. And if it's happened to you once, it's likely happening to other salespeople in your industry regularly.

The Championship Response Protocol:

  1. Go home and debrief – What exactly was the objection?
  2. Craft your ideal response – What do you wish you had said?
  3. Practice it out loud – Until it flows naturally
  4. Visualize the next encounter – See yourself handling it confidently
  5. Get excited for the rematch – Yes, you read that right

The 15-20 Objection Reality:

Here's what most salespeople don't realize: Every industry, every product, every service faces the same core objections, just wrapped in different language:

  • Price/Budget concerns
  • Timing issues
  • Authority/Decision-making power
  • Trust/Credibility questions
  • Urgency challenges
  • Comparison shopping
  • Past bad experiences
  • Feature/Benefit misunderstandings
  • Implementation concerns
  • Risk aversion

The Transformation Moment:

Here's what happens when you master this approach: You'll walk into your next appointment actually hoping they throw that objection at you. Why? Because the feeling you get when you confidently handle an objection that used to stump you is intoxicating. It's the moment you realize you're becoming a true sales professional.

The Competitive Advantage:

While your competitors are still getting flustered by common objections, you'll be smoothly guiding conversations toward closes. You'll project confidence because you ARE confident. You've done the work.

The Lazy Tax:

But if you keep getting stumped by the same objections over and over? You're paying what I call the "lazy tax" – lost commissions, damaged confidence, and missed opportunities. All because you couldn't be bothered to spend 30 minutes preparing for something you knew was coming.

Your Action Plan:

  1. List your top 5 most common objections – The ones that have stumped you before
  2. Craft compelling responses – Not scripts, but thoughtful approaches
  3. Practice them daily – Until they become second nature
  4. Track your improvement – Notice how your confidence grows
  5. Celebrate your victories – When you handle objections smoothly

Remember: Professional athletes don't get surprised by the same play twice. Neither should professional salespeople.

What objection used to stump you that you've now mastered? Share your transformation story in the comments – inspire someone else to do the work.
