"Watch this tip, and you'll sell a million dollars tomorrow."
Your BS detector just went off, didn't it? You might keep reading, but you're not expecting much. That's our natural reaction to promises of pleasure.
But what if I said: "Watch this tip to make sure nobody hangs up on you ever again"?
Now you're paying attention. That's the power of selling away from pain instead of toward pleasure.
The Pain vs. Pleasure Principle:
When you're selling, you're solving a problem your client has. If you can promise them that your product or service will reduce their pain from that problem, your chances of making a sale skyrocket.
The Traffic Light Example:
You're driving to work on your usual route. A guy waves you down and says, "Hey, turn left here. It's quicker – you'll save 10 minutes."
You're in a habit. You'll probably keep driving your normal way because you don't really believe it'll save time.
But if he says, "You need to turn here – there's a wreck ahead that could cost you 30 minutes," you'll immediately turn. Why? Because you're moving away from pain.
The Messaging Transformation:
Pleasure-focused (weak):
- "Our software will increase your efficiency"
- "This service will improve your results"
- "You'll save money with our solution"
Pain-focused (powerful):
- "Stop losing deals because of slow response times"
- "Never miss another deadline that costs you clients"
- "Eliminate the budget overruns that are killing your profits"
The Implementation Strategy:
- Identify the pain your product solves
- Quantify the cost of that pain
- Make it personal and immediate
- Position your solution as pain relief, not pleasure enhancement
Why Pain Motivates:
- Urgency: Pain demands immediate action
- Clarity: Problems are easier to understand than benefits
- Emotion: Fear of loss is stronger than hope of gain
- Believability: People trust their current pain more than promised pleasure
Your Pain-Point Discovery:
Ask prospects:
- "What's the biggest challenge you're facing with [area]?"
- "What's this problem costing you right now?"
- "What happens if this doesn't get solved?"
- "How is this affecting your [sleep/stress/team/budget]?"
Your Messaging Challenge:
This week, rewrite your sales presentations to lead with pain relief instead of pleasure promises. Notice how prospects respond differently when you're pulling them away from problems rather than pushing them toward benefits.
Remember: People will do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure.
Comment HELP if you're struggling to identify and articulate the pain points your solution solves.
